Of course it will certainly not be our good bottle of wine that will change the planet; but somewhere we must also start.
You probably already know the carbon footprint of the car you drive (if you don't know on our site you can easily calculate it) but I think you don't know what the carbon footprint of the bottle of wine you drink is.
Carbon footprint of a bottle of wine
Grupo ARCE following the methodology PAS 2050 , analyzed the carbon footprint of a single bottle of wine. Not just any wine, but a Verdejo di Rueda, to be precise. "Verdejo wines are aromatic, often smooth and full-bodied," he says Wikipedia .
Are they also environmentally friendly?
Reducing climate impacts, regardless of the impact of a car or the impact of a wine, requires some knowledge of how the product is produced.
The raw material production phase emits most of the carbon emissions
From the first result, we can see that the raw material production stage emits more. Commodities account for 0.80 up 1.28 kg CO2 equivalent emissions. Remember: the functional unit analyzed here is a bottle and the approach is from birth to grave. This means that they considered the entire life cycle of a bottle of wine, from viticulture to winemaking, from drinking to throwing the bottle away.
Carbon Footprint of Wine product: it's true: it's not transport - it's packaging
Interestingly, the biggest chunk of wine impact isn't its transportation. And the packaging, as you can see in the following image. By the way: the distribution / retail phase is based on a total distance of around 2200 km. Grape production, or should we say the most essential part of the winemaking process, contributes only 32%, while the most influential carbon emission comes from the packaging. Almost half of the total carbon footprint of the product - 46%! - comes from the packaging.
So the message is to RECYCLE THE GLASS
GeMiTo contributes in its small way to the reduction of the environmental impact.
- We purchase and research products exclusively in our territories; Genoa, Milan and Turin. This guarantees you a careful and continuous selection of wines.
- Our producers use only their grapes, avoiding unnecessary movements and giving us the opportunity to know exactly what we make you drink.
- We ship directly from the cellars: with the promo #dallavignaacasatua we deliver free of charge throughout Italy in 24/28 hours
- We compensate shipments with Offset, protect forests and contribute to the fight against climate change
Offset calculates the cost of offsetting emissions and uses your funds to protect forests.
Through Offset, contributions are funding the Jarí Para REDD + Avoided Unplanned Deforestation project in the Amazon rainforest, a Pachama-certified Verified Carbon Standard (VCS) project.
